The Energy Storage Association will become part of the American Clean Power Association as part of a merger that brings the renewable energy groups together under a single roof.

Both associations announced Thursday their intent to merge, saying they will combine their staff, programs and members. ESA is a $4.2 million-revenue association that represents companies that develop energy storage technologies. ACP was officially launched earlier this year, having been formed from the now-defunct $25 million-revenue American Wind Energy Association.

The merger will take effect Jan. 1, subject to final approval by ESA members.

"Our board sees the merger with ACP as a powerful new chapter for our industry and a pathway to achieving 100 (gigawatts) of new energy storage by 2030," said Kiran Kumaraswamy, ESA's board chairman.

ACP was created with the aim of representing all facets of the clean energy sector. The association's founders at one point approached the Solar Energy Industries Association about a possible merger, but SEIA declined. Energy storage is critical for the widespread adoption of wind and solar energy as neither produces electricity consistently, unlike fossil fuel and nuclear power plants.

ESA represents more than 200 companies, according to a statement. CEO Kelly Speakes-Backman left the organization in January after joining the Biden administration as principal deputy assistant secretary for energy efficiency and renewable energy at the Department of Energy. Jason Burwen was named interim CEO.

The ESA website lists 11 staff members.
